Welcome to the Winnipeg Spanish Immersion Blog. We are Kathy Heppner and Eugenia Lehmann, friends who are working towards adding another immersion/bilingual program here in our city.
Kathy has lived in Winnipeg for most of her adult life and has four children. She has been a teacher in the Winnipeg School Division and Hanover School Division. Though she does not come from a Spanish speaking family, she learned the language while living abroad in Bolivia. It was working for a Non-Governmental Organization for three years which gave her the opportunity to learn Spanish. Her children were schooled in Spanish and upon returning back to Winnipeg with bilingual children wondered how they could continue learning Spanish in a formal way.
Eugenia is a long time resident of Winnipeg and has two children. Her children are multi-lingual, in German, French, English and Spanish. She is the daughter of Spanish speaking parents from Mexico. Eugenia is very involved in the community and is currently leading a Spanish Playgroup that meets at the Glenwood Community Centre. It was here that she met Kathy and as they became friends, asked each other why there wasn't a Spanish language program in Winnipeg. So they decided to start working on a proposal to the school divisions to make this dream a reality.
